Group Workshop - Garden of Scarecrows

It’s time for scarecrow building in the MOWA Gardens. Make it a fall family adventure and bring your dream scarecrow to life. Will your creation be a trendsetter in the field? Classic yet unique? Whatever your style, your scarecrow will shine. We’ll light up your creation for the City of West Bend’s Drive Through Pumpkin Patch down Veterans Avenue from 6:00–10:00 that evening. Don’t miss your chance to be part of the spectacle of scarecrows.

Scarecrow Props MOWA Provides: 

  • Assembled frame for your scarecrow
  • Straw/stuffing
  • Scissors
  • Twine
  • Rubber bands
  • 2 pairs of gloves 
  • Glue
  • Tips on construction
  • Lighting for night

Scarecrow Props You Bring:

  • Scarecrow Head. This could be a squash/gourd, pillowcase, paper mâché, sewn sack, etc.
  • Clothes. Top and bottom. We recommend suspenders, overalls, onesies, or making sure the top and bottoms are attached.
  • Accessories. This can include hats, hair, props, shoes, fashion accessories, anything extra to give personality to your scarecrow
  • Decorating supplies. This could include paint, markers, etc.

Pro Scarecrow Tips:

  • Dress appropriately. This event takes place outside rain or shine (would cancel for severe weather).
  • If you want to enhance clothing or head with paint or other details, it is encouraged to do so ahead of time.
  • The vertical scarecrow post is ¾ in x 1 ½ in x 72 in. Feel free to cut a hole or slot into the head before arriving. The horizontal post is ¾ in x 1 ½ in x 36 in.
  • Be aware of overall weight of your items. The pole needs to support the weight.
  • No electricity is available.  
  • MOWA will provide straw from bales supplied by a local farmer. Please note if you or your family has allergies.

Safety is Our Priority:

  • Each group will be assigned a 10-foot circle in the Gardens and will be socially distanced from other groups. 
  • Masks are required.
  • We will stagger arrival times between 10:00–11:00 based on preference. 
  • All supplies will be placed in circles ahead of time.
  • Rubber gloves will be provided and can be used for your own safety or scarecrow props.
  • Prepare as much as possible in advance. We will have some saws and cutting tools available but they are limited to adult use only.

Scarecrow Pick-up:

Participants can pick up scarecrows at the end of West Bend’s Drive Through Pumpkin Patch on Saturday, October 24 at 10:00pm or on Sunday, October 25 from 9:00–11:00am. There is no overnight security. MOWA is not responsible for any damaged or lost property

 

This workshop is $20 per group but for registration purposes, it will say for 1 adult. Please act as if this says group. You do NOT have to pay per person.
